Dear Rachel,
a remarkable number of market studies on either micromachines sensors or MEMS
products in general have been performed during the last few years. Some of the
more influential studies have been published by:
- SPC Systems Planning Corporation (1994, 1997)
- SRI Consulting (1994, 1997)
- SEMI (1996)
- NEXUS (1994, 1997)
- Intelligent Microsensor Technology (1996)
- Samsung & MRI (1996, focused on inertial sensors)
Currently, there is much discussion whether these market studies are too
optimistic or not (see e.g. Micromachine Devices Vol. 2 No. 8, pp. 6-11, Vol. 2
No.11, pp. 5-6). Most of the forecasts are based on market surveys. For many of
the surveyed markets and their products, micromachining is certainly an enabling
technology. But it is not neccessary the only one. That leads to remarkably
different market projections. We will certainly witness a detailed discussion
about the market potential of micromachining technologies in the next time.
For an introduction, I would recommend the papers in Micromachine Devices Vol. 2
No. 8. In the paper by Sid Marshall (pp. 6-7) you will find a comparision
between the MEMS market projections.
If I can assist you with some more detailed information, please do not hesitate
to contact me.
Kindest regards
Matthias

Does anyone know of market research on the micromachined sensors
markets? (ie- market size, growth, players)
