INTRODUCTION
Rapid advances have been made in the technology for the manufacture of
microsystems and microstructures in recent years. These major advances and the
development of micro electro mechanical systems has created a demand for
accurate design and simulation systems which can be used to predict the
performance of the systems and the behaviour of the fabrication and
manufacturing processes. As the fabrication of prototypes is very expensive,
simulation of the device properties in the design phase is of great importance.
The design of microstructures can be greatly enhanced by using simulation
technology. Not only can the microsystem be improved, but also, the production
process can be optimised.
The physical phenomena affecting the design of microsystems and micro-
structures are many, ranging from fluid flow around the device, the thermal
characteristics of the device, stress and displacement of cracks and the
general electrostatic behaviour.
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of the conference is to promote international cooperation among
scientists and engineers involved in the design and simulation of microsystems
and microstructures.
The conference will discuss papers on any of the topics listed or others
related to the theme of the meeting with particular emphasis on applications of
the techniques proposed. The participants are encouraged to critically review
existing ideas and explore new research ideas.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers are invited on the topics indicated above and others falling within the
scope of the conference. Three copies of an abstract of no more than 300 words,
clearly stating the purpose, results and conclusion of the work to be described
in the final paper should be submitted to the Conference Secretariat by 20
February 1995. Each abstract should clearly state the most relevant conference
topic to the submitted abstract.
CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
The Proceedings of the conference will be published in book form by
Computational Mechanics Publications and will be available to delegates at the
time of registration. In addition the Proceedings will be distributed after the
conference throughout the International booktrade. The language of the
conference will be English.
TIME SCHEDULE
Return reply form: as soon as possible
Submit Abstract as soon as possible and no later than: 20 February 1995
Preliminary Acceptance: 20 March 1995
Submit Final Paper: 19 May 1995
CONFERENCE DATES
The conference will be held in Southampton from 26 - 28 September 1995.
CONFERENCE LOCATION
Excellent rail and road links in and around Southampton provide easy access to
major cities and to London Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton Airports.
Southampton itself offers many varied attractions and is most famous for its
maritime connections. Today, over 130 acres of dockland have been transformed
into a busy 'Waterfront' Community offering a variety of entertainment, bars,
restaurants and boat trips around the solent. The City centre has a large
shopping complex with indoor malls. In contrast the 'old town' has many
historical sites, including walks around the medieval walls and museums.
The New Forest is just 8 miles to the West of the City Centre. This area of 145
square miles is one of the most beautiful ancient woodlands in Europe and was
once the hunting grounds of Norman Kings. Wessex Institute of Technology is set
in the heart of the New Forest and there will be an opportunity to visit the
campus during the Conference.
EXHIBITION
There will be some mini-exhibition facilities provided at the time of the
Conference for the display of products, services and publications relating to
Microsystems and Micro-structures. Please contact the Conference Secretariat
for more details or register your interest on the enquiry form.
