After googling around for a bit, it looks like "tranche de silicium"
(feminine) is the most commonly used term.  For example, from
http://www.lemonde.fr/article/0,5987,3244--258510-VT,00.html:

        En effet, ce dernier est lii au nombre de microprocesseurs
        qu'il est possible de tailler dans une tranche de silicium
        (wafer).
