Hi Lakshmi,
It seems to me you could use a long-chain 1-alkanethiol to
make your surface hydrophobic. The thiol (SH groups) will coordinate
to your gold surface leaving the hydrophobic alkane ends pointing
outward from your surface. 1-octylthiol or 1-dodecylthiol could
be useful here.

Subject: [mems-talk] hydrophobic gold
I am looking for a chemical that would make gold hydrophobic. For
example when gold is in contact with strong acids it turns hydrophilic.
Is there a way to reverse this? Any help is greatly appreciated.
-Lakshmi Namburi.
