D) BRIEF REPORT OF THE PROJECT WORK
i) PROJECTS: MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY (Nanotechnology) Title: Growth of carbon nanotubes on Ni islands, created on tin oxide substrate for potential application of sensor based devices. Position Final year project student.
Summary: This project is based on diode-type configuration. In many experimental situations, the study carbon nanotube base devices, in particular when some nano-scale characteristics of the materials are of interest, it is essential to grow catalyst such as Ni island/dots. Ni islands are created on tin oxide substrate. Afterward, we will be growing carbon nanotubes on to that. The Field emission performances will be obtained from the diode-type electrode configuration in terms of turn-around voltage, emission current and field enhancement factors. Duration : Four Months (14th September, 2005 to 12th January, 2006).
Location: Nanotechnology Research Institute (NRI), University Of Ulster, Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, UK
ii) PROJECTS: MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY (Nanotechnology)
Title: Sample Preparation and Synthesis of Carbon Nanotube (CNT). Summary: Carbon Nanotube are generally prepared by Arc Discharge, Chemical Vapour Deposition and Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition. I have worked on Chemical Vapour Deposition and Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition for synthesis of CNT. In Chemical Vapour Deposition, coat the substrate with catalyst and place it in the oven. Heating range should be 650-900 oC and then slowly add carbon-containing gas i.e. methane gas. As carbon decomposes, it releases carbon atoms, which recombines and form nanotube. In Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition, first create a plasma which increases the chemical reaction takes place between the source gases. The product of that reaction is a solid material which condenses on all surfaces inside the reactor. Duration: Two Months (12th July, 2005 to 09th September, 2005).
Location: Defence Research and Development organization (DRDO), Timarpur, India
iii) PROJECTS: MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY (Nanotechnology)
Title: Piezo-Resistive Pressure Sensor Software tool used: IntelliSuite Summary: Piezo-Resistive effect refers to a change in the electric resistance of a material when stresses or strains are applied. I have played with Piezo-resistive material in such a behavior in the diaphragm that for sensing the induced strains as an applied pressure that deflects the diaphragm. After that, analyze that deflection in terms of resistance. Duration: Two and half Months (15th January, 2005 to 30th March, 2005)
Location: Semiconductor Complex Limited (SCL), Chandigarh, India.
iv) PROJECTS: BACHELOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
Title: Global Positioning System Software tool used: Visual Basic 6.0
Summary: The GPS uses satellite and computers to compute positions anywhere in the Earth. The GPS is based on satellite ranging. Satellite provides all relevant details to the computer about the person or anything. It is used in Radar, Mobile etc. I have made front end software. In that which received signals that were coming from satellite. And that signal describes about the position with respect to latitude and longitude. That signals was in ASCII mode. So that software coverts ASCII mode into Hexadecimal mode. Duration: Seven Months (September2002 to April, 2003) Location: Hindustan Aeronautical Limited, India
